Quarterly Update!

I like the idea of doing the blog to keep track of what I've been painting, but it just doesn't happen that I remember to take pictures as and when I complete stuff, so over the last few months I've been working on the following.

So first up we have the 10mm Finnish I got from Pendraken at the Leeds show. Based specifically so we can try them with Chain of Command to see if it will work in the smaller scale, these ones are finished, the rest have been based up and will be used with these ones for BKC.  Russians will be bought at Carronade and the same will be done with them.

Next up, there was a small resurrection of DBA at the club, and seeing as RiC and myself have been talking about it for a while, I finally got round to finishing off my 15mm Hordes of Things armies, I have Arabs and Undead, most of whom were already painted but needed tidying up and rebasing onto proper bases, all new MDF bases with magnetic strips on the bottom so they'll stick to a biscuit tin. I have a bunch of Dwarves, Medieval Humans, and Celts that need worked on and I have some Romans already.

This next set are the 28mm WW2 Germans, I got one squad for christmas, the rest I picked up second hand from ebay, 2 squads finished, 1 more to go and then buy some support options for playing Chain of Command.

Lastly for this update my Skaven warband for the next Mordheim campaign at the club, painted up differently to Fi's Skavan so I can claim these ones.

More to come at some point, I bought Blood Eagle when it came out and I'll no doubt get a few more Vikings for it, as well as playing with some of the more mythical warbands from it will likely see some of my Elves getting a tidy up as Sidhe and some dwarves as well.

Likewise on the new rules front Sharp Practice 2 is finally on the horizon and preordered so that means a concerted push to get my forces painted up for it. I keep hoping that I'll be able to pick up some prepainted Napoleonics at the Carronade flea market really cheaply, but I doubt that's going to happen as I really hate painting formal uniforms.

Crusades

Getting round to some of this slowly, Crusaders and Arabs based for Warmaster about 1200pts available from each.  This goes alongside the 3 fantasy armies already made up already (High elves, forces of good and evil from middle earth.)

First up Arabs.

Then Crusaders

It only leaves me Undead and Mongols to finish off for my current 10mm armies. Though I do have some Romans I picked up at the Carronade flea market, (That had some hoplites in the bag! which unfortunately just fuels my ideas for the Peloponisian wars)  For another day methinks.

Mongol Comparison

After talking about it at club tonight, here's the pic I took of my various 10mm (Historical) cavalry

From the left, Mongol, Mongol, Knights, Arabs, Mongols, Knights, Knights. The Mongols and the Arabs are from Pendraken and the Knights are from GrandScale I think they're called. (The OldGlory Uk 10mm stuff)

The Mongols although small when sat side by side are very crisp sculptures and you won't notice when arrayed in an army by themselves.

Painting Update

Well it's been a while since I last did a proper post, I've mostly been concentrating on my 10mm stuff for quite a while now. With the exception of a Zeveda ME109 my German Army is finished now, the reason for this was so I could enter it into the Pendraken Painting competition, seeing as I started it 2 years ago and entered the first infantry unit I painted into the comp 2 years ago. I did the big push at the start of the month to get the Tigers and Panzers finished for the deadline.

Other than that though I've been soldiering on with my Arab army and I only have a couple of Cavalry Units left (about half way done) and they'll be done for the moment. Enough for about 1100-1200 pts for Warmaster. (and I have enough for another Infantry Brigade)

Now that I'm at that stage, I've prepped all of my Crusaders and Mongols and I intend to do them one unit from each at a time to help relieve the monotony of doing an army of entirely horse archers and one of mainly armour.

If these get too much, I also have the last few High elf Cavalry and my Undead to get stuck in about to finish them off to the 1200pts I'm aiming for. Alternately I can finish off basing my 28mm Medieval stuff for Impetus, Dux Brit, Saga etc. Or get started on my Airfix North Africa stuff.

Adventures in Storage

Well after Mark at club offered up some old steel lined boxes. I have embarked on the storage adventure that is magnetic basing. It's something I've been pondering for a while for my 10mm stuff, rather than foam which I think is probably more suited to 28mm stuff.

So I bought some magnetic tape at Claymore and tonight I've sat and cut it into strips and and stuck it to the bases of my WW2 Germans and my Saracens (that are done so far) It seems pretty solid for what I'm needing which is really only for shelf to table, and occasionally to club as in the past I've felt my Germans slide across their old box when I've picked it off the shelf. The extra little rim under the base will also aid immensely when trying to pick them up from a flat surface without having to resort to grabbing hold of the miniatures themselves.

So all good I think.

My 10mm Warhamster hordes continue to expand with 2x 1500 pt fantasy armies already finished (Battle of five armies, Goblins and forces of good) and another 2x 1500 pt on the way High elves (almost finished) and Undead. I also have my Saracens and Crusaders (Courtesy of Dave) under way.

The last one is Mongols after Pendraken tried a kickstarter type thing through their forum. Apparently they should be ready by Oct/Nov time so that will be another 1000 pts or so to fight my crusaders from the North while the Saracens take them from the south.

Next Purchase

Well my next purchase is done, just waiting on delivery now. Winging it's way in the post sometime will be the majority of the remains of my German WW2 force.

Panzer Brigade and Artillery Section from Pendraken alongside the remaining transports (I hope) that I need for my infantry. Once that lot is painted up and based, I don't think I really need much more for my German force. Then it'll be onto the Russians to match against them for this period, probably got another army in the meantime though, Saracens for the missus if the ones from Old Glory scale up ok otherwise I'll probably get some Fireforge boxes to make an Impetus army.

BKC Germans

Seeing as I'm taking pictures, here's my finished (So far) WW2 Germans. Couple of WIP's, my painting competition entry and then the finished ones. Fallschirmjaeger on the left and middle, Heer on the right. Everything is from Pendraken, the infantry are German Para's Army Pack and added are the 2 Pak40's, 2 Stug III's, 3 Opal Blitz Trucks and 3 SDKFZ 251/1's. The draught horses are some butchered high elf chariot mounts for warmaster.

So next for these I need another 6 transports for the company on the left, the Heer will remain on foot and the addition of an Engineering section and some Panzer Companies to finish it all off. Then it'll be the Russians up next.

Claymore Update

Well it was Claymore at the weekend, came back with more stuff for the missus than I did for myself! This keeps happening at shows, it was the same at Salute this year.

Anyway, bought the big Arab pack from Pendraken to make a start to her Saracen army. Got some of it tidied up, the horse archers are going to be a pain to clean due to the flash that has formed between the bow and the arm that will all need to be dug out.

Either way though it's given me the following for Warhamster
3 units spearmen
1 unit light horse archers
2 stands of med & hvy cavalry. (1 further pack of each will give me 2 units of each)
1 unit of archers

I'll get more packs from the likes of Old Glory and Magistar Militium to add more variety in the units, (including the compulsory camels that she wants)

So it's a good start, I'll work on this one over the winter I think and then start getting my crusaders. (and world war 2) Until then she'll need to be content with running down goblins and elves.
