Dux Britainarium

Another part of my purchase from York was some sabots for my dark age forces, I did have everything on ranked sabots which I think was fine for the British troops and their shieldwall. But I liked the look of the more ragged Saxon lines I'd seen from others so I got some skirmish style sabots for them.

Still need to flock the sabots and I completely forgot to get a more skirmish style base for the skirmish archers, but they'll do quite happily.  And just because here's the British forces that they face.

Like everything I need to finish off the Hearthguard (used Late Romans) bases and do their shields.

Some Romans

I got these chaps down at Vapnartak as my main purchase for the day. So they're all assembled and these are the first 2 groups painted up. Basing and shields will wait until I'm finished the rest and will get done in one go. I'm still swithering about whether to get shield transfers or not. I quite like how they make the shields look with the nice big dirty bit on the bottom and the marks and scratches over them. But it still feels a bit like cheating, I'm just not sure I could actually manage to do anywhere near as good a job myself.

The poses of the models are disappointingly fixed and the arm options are almost all the same, I ended up subbing in some arms left over from my Dark age warriors and vikings for a little more variety. Either way, the armoured ones will do for making the elite unit for my Dux Brit British and will be used for Broken Legions and I think there should be enough for the new Roman Age Saga variant as well.  So all in all a good win win on usability.

Darkages to Vikings

Well it's been a while and it's been a busy time with lots of painting going on to finish off a variety of armies. First up my Vikings, pretty much everything is Gripping Beast and this gives me enough for two full Dux Britanarium forces as well as enough figures to cover any other skirmish game we try out for this period.

The army in it's entirety.

Harald and his Champion

Huscarls, Hearthguard,

Bersekers, Cavaly

Freeman, Bondi etc

Levy, Leidang etc

Skirmishers.

As always, apologies for the crap pictures but trying to get a decent amount of sunlight into the room with all my stuff is a challenge.

I have another Lord but I need to get round to painting his banner before it's finished.

Next will be back to 10mm....

Dux Britaniarum

We played our first game of it last night, Ric was my opponent. A big departure for both of us who have been far more used to playing Warhammer and Warmaster derivatives for far too many years.

It seemed to go well, but our choice of terrain hindered the game rather a lot. I think we've got the gist of it, but we're going to go for a more stand up fight next week to allow us to figure out the combat rules a bit better and hopefully this time we'll be a bit quicker as we had to end the game unfinished last night due to time constraints, but to be fair we did have the last few turns going a lot smoother than our first bumbling attempts.

Claymore

Is it always a bad plan to go to a show with a big shopping list and lots of money? Oh well, I did and I got everything I had actually been looking for. Soooo today's purchases are.

Dux Britanniarum Rules.
A lot of vikings. (Dark age warrior plastic box, berserkers, monks, 2 warlords, swine and hounds)
Kallistra 10mm Undead and High Elf cavalry to finish off my Warmaster Fantasy armies.
A ton of bases for my 10mm armies and some magnetic tape.

Flames of War 3rd ed mini rulebook.
Dystopian Wars Rulebook. (Finally)

So all good stuff, I think my first priority will be to get my Viking forces assembled, but not necessarily painted yet, I'll speak to RiC to let him know what he needs for his side of things. Or if I get inspired enough, I'll get everything assembled for both sides.  Either way, I aim to have enough done that I can play Saga as well if anyone is up for it.
